Robinson Renovation & Custom Homes, Inc. Introduce
For residents of Gainesville and the broader Alachua County, the dream of a perfect home often involves some form of renovation, remodeling, or custom construction. Whether it’s an updated kitchen, a new addition to accommodate a growing family, or a complete custom build from the ground up, the success of such a project hinges on one critical decision: choosing the right contractor. In North Central Florida, where a home must withstand intense sun and the occasional severe weather, a contractor’s expertise, reliability, and integrity are more important than ever. Robinson Renovation & Custom Homes, Inc. is a company that has been a part of the Gainesville community for decades, offering a wide array of services to help locals bring their residential visions to life.
Robinson Renovation & Custom Homes, Inc. is a long-standing, family-owned design-build firm. The company has a history in the Gainesville area, with roots going back to 1958. According to their official public information, they are a licensed General Contractor in the State of Florida, holding a license that is an important credential for any company undertaking significant construction work. This license is a public record and an essential piece of information for any consumer to verify. The company's longevity and self-described commitment to quality, dependability, and moral character have been core to their mission for generations. Their focus is on the "design-build" process, which is intended to streamline a project by keeping design and construction teams under one roof, providing a single point of accountability for the entire project. This process, as described by the company, is meant to ensure continuity and clear communication from start to finish.
The experiences of their customers, however, present a varied picture. One client, who hired them for a major re-siding and addition project, was very satisfied with the outcome. This client appreciated the steady progress despite supply chain issues and found the team to be responsive to change orders. This individual's positive experience highlights the value of a licensed contractor for structural work and the importance of regular communication with the project manager to ensure a smooth process. On the other hand, a different customer who underwent a whole-house remodel had a very negative experience, citing issues with communication, poor workmanship from subcontractors, and a lack of accountability from the company's owner. This review detailed problems with plumbing, electrical, painting, and sheetrock work, leading the homeowner to hire other professionals to fix the issues at additional time and expense. This customer's feedback underscores the critical importance of a homeowner's active involvement, daily monitoring of work, and meticulous documentation throughout any major renovation project.
Robinson Renovation & Custom Homes, Inc. is located at 6910 W University Ave, Gainesville, FL 32607, USA. The location on a major avenue provides a physical presence that is both professional and visible, which can be reassuring for clients who prefer to deal with a brick-and-mortar business rather than a contractor with no fixed location.
The central location in Gainesville allows the company to efficiently serve a wide range of communities, including those in Newberry, Alachua, and other nearby towns. This accessibility is crucial for a business that relies on in-person consultations, project management, and site visits. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I had Robinson Renovation do a re-siding and addition on my house, and I am really glad I went with them. I would not use them if I was going to just do a small refresh of repainting or doing new floors spending less than $10K. I would just hire a painter and a flooring company in that situation. Since I was doing something structural, I knew that I needed a full licensed contractor to get involved. Despite all the disruptions in the supply chain currently going, the progress was steady and they were very responsive to a couple of the change orders we put in during the process.I'll say that the construction process also goes a lot better if you check in with your project manager on a weekly basis about any concerns. I was surprised how easy some fixes were to some stuff that was bothering me, but didn't really think to ask early in the process.
February 28 · Charles WiseWe hired RRCH for a whole house remodel (2023). During the planning phase, pre-contract signing, Jason Robinson was great to work with. Post-contract signing, Jason often disappeared and was quite unpleasant to work with. We got to a point where we dreaded having him at our house. He either lies or flat out refuses to take accountability for poor workmanship. Additionally, their project manager, albeit a nice guy, was not prepared for the job and really should not have been involved with our project.Similar to other reviews I've seen online, we've had plumbing issues (construction debris completely clogged main drain), electrical issues (exposed wires, shorts, non working plugs), horrible paint job which we had them stop (embarrassingly bad actually), damaged floor tiles, damaged roofing from gutter install, strong chemical odor from insulation install, and an absolutely horrible sheetrock install (New Age Plastering was the company they used) with dozens of cracks and dogeared corners - Jason predictably blames our house even though the cracks can be tied to poor sheetrock install (ignoring my request to have sheetrock shimmed in areas where new meets old, sheets installed too tightly, and in some instances their sub's poor carpentry). A year later I'm starting the process to hire others to start fixing RRCH's work at additional time and expense to us.Bottom line, do your research and talk to others. We have since heard from other people (including from lawyers we contacted) that our experience with RRCH was not unique. After hiring a contractor make sure you monitor daily any and all work being done to your home. I can't stress enough - document everything. Looking back we wish we would have stopped them from working when we saw issues and refused to pay until issues were addressed properly, even if it meant firing RRCH and having another company finish the job. Perhaps RRCH is better at building cookie-cutter ADUs or new additions but from our experience they should not be trusted with renovations. At the end RRCH agreed to credit us a small amount of money for the work we had them stop doing and we cut our losses (suing them would have meant more time and aggravation and honestly we just wanted to be done with them). It's not a great feeling being unable to enjoy one's home and also embarrassed to have anyone over after nearly two years of work trying to bring it back to life. Ultimately Jason should be ashamed. They truly were horrible people to work with.
December 16 · RyanWe hired RRCH to build our in-law house, next to our daughters house. They designed the home after meeting with us to find out our needs and wants within our budget. Jason and Cherie listened closely to guide the design team to create the small home we wanted. Then the home was built in a very timely manner. Building supervisor, Justin was amazing! It has so much light coming in due to recommendations from Jason so it doesn’t feel small. Its beautiful and we love it.
September 06 · Holly HowardI hired RRCH to do a whole house renovation in February 2023 the total value was (>$400,000). Along the way there were numerous issues, but more recently the most serious one was uncovered after the renovation was completed and after moving back in. The renovation was completed in February 2024, and I moved back in in March 2024.I’m listing the just the most recent serious issue however there were many other issues along the way.I noticed a very foul smell in my master bathroom in April 2024 and contacted RRCH a few weeks later in May after realizing that it was sewer gas.I was told at that time “I don’t smell anything”. Their plumber was not contacted, and no effort was made to try to diagnose the issue. After continuing to smell the same smell, I hired a plumber who told me that there was a venting issue. The plumber I hired noticed that flushing the toilet caused fluctuations in the sink, which is a sign of a venting issue.I contacted RRCH again and this time they brought their subcontracted plumber who said, “I don’t know what to tell you, pour bleach down the sink”. RRCH did offer to replace the sink. Despite having the other plumber, I hired meet with RRCH and their contracted plumber, and explain that I definitely have an issue and that there was a lot of fluctuation in the sink when flushing the toilet, no effort done at that point to diagnose a venting issue at that time either.Jason from RRCH at that time told me that the venting and plumbing had to be right because the work was inspected. I followed their recommendation, poured bleach down the sink and within 4 days, the smell was back, plus now I have an oxidized sink overflow cap.I hired another plumber who came out and agreed with the other plumber who I hired previously, that I had a venting issue, and they tried to fix the issue by installing an auto vent. Which would have been less expensive than scoping with a camera. The auto vent price was $35.00 along with a service charge fee. At this time, the plumber I hired also found new pipes which were not insulated at all in the attic. They also found a missing washer in the p-trap as well. Instead of using a washer, the RRCH plumber attempted to seal the pipe with glue during the renovation.I contacted RRCH about reimbursing me for that cost and they said no, that thesink was the problem. Again, no effort was made to diagnose if I had a venting issue at that time either. After a lingering issue with the sewer gas smell, the plumber I hired came back and ran a camera down the vent and found that there was indeed a venting issue created during the remodel. The vent had a massive amount of backfall preventing the venting from working at all. To properly fix the issue at this point would involve opening the ceiling, because the attic space is very tight in that area.RRCH didn’t offer compensation initially for my extra costs, they just offered to send their plumber over to fix the issues that the plumber I hired foundThere was a total of 5 months after I initially reported the problem, that I had to smell sewer case. I mentioned to RRCH that I didn’t have confidence in the plumber they subcontracted with because of the issues above, and other issues that happened during the renovation process that I’ve listed below. RRCH eventually offered to pay the costs of replacing the washer along with that service charge but refused to pay the cost of the auto vent, or cost associated with future repairs by the plumber I hired who found of issues that RRCH’s plumber created and did not attempt to diagnose.Again, I’ve completely lost confidence in the ability of RRCH plumber to properly address the issues above since I have such a serious issue with the venting of the master bath along with numerous other issues. I've requested to get reimbursed for hiring the plumber who took the time to find the issues to fix the issues and get reimbursed which was refused.
September 20 · Sharrone SmithRRCH completed a large remodel on our kitchen and Florida room last year. They stayed within budget, and did an amazing job! The best part of the job was working with Jason to design our new living space! He really brought our ideas to life and found creative solutions for our needs. His office was always responsive to my many questions, and I would highly recommend them!
