★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Love Dunn Rite! Have used Mark & his crews on different projects on multiple properties since circa 2008. Always professional, never any discrepancies, and very competitively priced. Currently saving up for our whole exterior on our Yucaipa house to get painted and have no intention on shopping around. Mark will 100% be the company I call to get it done! Highly recommended!!
May 13 · Brian StacksI would give 10 stars to DunnRite. With so many things to do buying my first house, I would play it safe and go with an off-white through the house instead of adding more to my overwhelming plate. Mark mentioned that choosing colors I love would be a great gift to myself during this time and “Home is where the heart is, and we are painting the inside of your heart.”Choosing colors can be scary, but Mark's expertise made it a fun breeze. In just 20 min he lead me to personal colors I love instead of settling! They discovered some previous poor drywall repairs causing problems in my ceiling and windows, sent me photos, and gave me an excellent price for the extra work. It's worth mentioning that I was out of town for work while part of the work was being done, and Mark even coordinated two utility connections that would have been delayed. I returned home to ease and beauty.Talk about Full Service; thank you, DunnRite Painting!! I’ll be contacting you for the outside soon.
June 09 · Suzanne CoulsonI had an all-around terrible experience with DunnRite painting. My wood house was built in 1920. I hired them to touch up some spots in the interior where I had had some new windows installed and to strip and re-paint the exterior window trim and a door that was chipping. When the boss Mark St. John came by to give me a quote, he seemed really competent and knowledgeable, and he had a lead-safe certification, and I felt good about it, so I hired him.I waited for about 6 weeks for him to get finished with other jobs, and during that time, communication wasn't great. I finally heard from him around 2pm on a Sunday saying they were ready to start work the following day. I asked what time they would be arriving, and he didn't respond to my message until 7pm that evening, saying that they would be starting at 7am the next morning. Great, thanks for the warning. He arrived with his crew, went over the work to be done, and then he left, leaving just his crew to do the work. He did not give me a written contract.Right away, I wasn't super confident in the work the crew was doing. They were getting dust everywhere and weren't even wearing simple dust masks (so much for lead-safe practices), they didn't take down the door I'd asked them to strip and paint but were instead just kind of scraping away at it as it was flopping around on its hinges. They didn't strip or fully scrape off the chipping paint, and I didn't realize what was going on until they had instead filled in the cracks between the chipping paint with wood filler and then primed over it using an interior-rated primer. After they left for the day, I inspected the work more carefully and decided that I was NOT satisfied and that I needed to say something about it. I texted Mark saying I wasn't happy and sent him some photos, asking him to come over the following morning to go over the work and discuss a solution. I followed up a few hours later with an e-mail.My full list of complaints was as follows:- Failure to adequately scrape or otherwise remove existing paint from surfaces, instead doing only minimal scraping and some sanding and then priming over surfaces that still had chipping paint and applying wood filler to conceal chipping paint- Failure to adequately control sanding dust inside the house when working outside by closing the windows or applying plastic covers to the insides of the windows when they needed to remain open- Failure to adequately cover floors and furniture inside when working inside- Failure to vacuum or adequately wipe dust from surfaces prior to painting- Using a shellac-based interior-rated primer on large exterior surfaces- Reluctance to remove door hardware prior to painting- Painting portions of the kitchen window trim that were not requested and without first preparing surfaces- Applying paint in the bathroom that was lumpy- Neglecting details, such as the edges of the exterior trimI heard nothing all that evening. The next morning, nobody showed up at 7 like they said they would. Around 8:30, one of the crew guys showed up and said he was just there to collect his stuff and that somebody else would be finishing the job. I still had heard nothing from the boss. I texted Mark saying that the guy had come and gone and asked what was going on. Nothing. Hours later, he wrote back and said "I'm not sure let me check". Never heard from him again. That evening, I e-mailed him to officially let him know he was fired, to give him my list of complaints (above), and to tell him that I was not going to pay him anything. Still never heard back from him, but at this point, I didn't want to. My guess is he figured that it was cheaper and easier for him to cut his losses for a day's labor and just disappear rather than come back and fix the mess the guys made.
July 28 · Melinda MorangMy husband and I have an old home and had been wanting new exterior paint for a few years. While driving around Redlands we noticed another old home being painted by DunnRite and it looked amazing. We contacted them and set up a time that worked for both of us. Once they got started our home was completely finished in just about a week and a half. We LOVE it. It looks fresh and beautiful. The attention to detail was great and they obviously have a lot of experience. The owner, Mark, was very responsive and friendly. Ready to make recommendations but was not pushy at all and respected our decisions. His crew was professional and hardworking. Communicated well when they would be around/what they needed. Very independent. Cleaned up when they were finished. Mark came by throughout the week to supervise/inspect and when the house was finished he did a final walk through with us to make sure we were satisfied. Reasonably priced and the cost did not fluctuate much from the estimate - it only did because we opted for a few upgrades, which Mark was upfront about in price. We are very happy with our home and would welcome DunnRite back in the future. We highly recommend their skills and service.
September 26 · Amy MassimianoThis 1 Star review is past due. I've actually used this company multiple times. Mark painted a coffered ceiling for us about 2 years ago, and they did a great job. Well fast forward 2 years later, I brought him into a job to paint some more coffered ceilings and it has been a total nightmare! This guy bid the job for $4,600. After walking the job in person for himself, he said nothing about the price he gave us. One week after starting the project he sent us a bill for 80% of his bid. He said he made a mistake on his bid and the price was going to double. Now right there, that is a terrible contractor, but wait, it gets worse.I went ahead and allowed him to up his bid to $7,000, and I gave him $3,000 on that date. Now here is where it gets bad, they painted the rest of the coffered ceiling without prepping them, which was 100% their responsibility. They puttied and bonded areas, then they never sanded anything, then just painted over it all. It is by far the worst paint job I've seen in almost 18 years in business. But wait it gets worse. So then, when I told him about it, he started to blame everyone else but himself, including myself and the customer. Multiple times he yelled at me, I mean went off! Sending long winded crazy text messages. All before he even looked at the job. So once he finally decided to look at the job, he fired his crew entirely. I tried to find common ground with this guy, but when every other sentence is either angry, or him telling myself (and the customer) about his personal problems; he can't pay his mortgage, he has to go to court all the time, boo hoo this, boo hoo that!!! What does that have to with myself, the customer, or this project? NOTHING. He would just go around in circles! So finally I had to fire him because I had to step in and fix his mess. This was written quickly off the top of my head, it was much worse than I described above. Do yourself a favor, and find another painter. This guy is going to have legal problems very soon, I'll be going after his contractors license, and filing complaints with BBB and Consumer Affairs. Mark needs to refund us the $4,500 we waisted with him (it should be more, because fixing his mistakes have cost triple what it would cost when done correctly) and forfeit his contractors license.I have attached 3 photos of the work we are having to do to correct this terrible paint job. We are having to sand through the paint, all the way to the wood, patch/fill, then repaint. It's so bad, we are having to do this multiple times in some sections.
